Except for normal class train tickets, Indian Railways requires reservation or booking in all sections of the journey. Reservations or booking allows travelers to get a certified berth in the selected class of train. There are two main ways you can make a booking or reservation.
A passenger can make offline payment reservations through the IRasiom portal, which is also called e-ticketing of Indian Railways. Apart from this, any passenger can book physically book at Indian Railway Booking Counter at Railway Station.
According to the IRCTC website – irctc.co.in, a passenger can make an advance reservation for 120 days, except for the date of the originating station of the train.
Once the tickets are booked, a specific PNR (Passenger Name Record) is prepared against each ticket.
How to book train tickets from IRCTC?
To book online tickets you must create an account on the Indian Railway website that is www.irctc.co.in.
After successful registration, you can click on the login option and enter your User Id and Password and Captcha Code and click on Login.
After logged in, you will see “Plan My Journey” on the Left-Hand Sight. Below it will be the Select Favorite Journey List, which will show you some columns that you have to fill. see how to fill the columns:
- From Station: Your Origin Station
- To Station: Destination Station
- Journey Date: Enter the date you wish to travel.
- Ticket Type: Which is e-Ticket
- Classes: In which class you want to travel (Keep it by default All Classes)
E-ticket will be received by a message on your phone and email id.
Booking Train Ticket
When you submit all your information, you will be given a list of your train as shown in the below.
If you belong to any of the quota listed right top corner of the irctc web portal select the appropriate quota.
Available Quotas are
- Sr Citizen
Then select the class(3A/2A/1A/SL/CC etc.) in which you want to travel select anyone from the classes. Now click Check Availability & Fair.
Then you will be shown Date and the available seats. If you do not get a seat on that date, you can see in the next day’s train whether the seats are available or not.select the date you want to book the ticket and click on it below option that is Book Now.
You have to fill your details after clicking on Book Now. You have to fill your name, Age, gender.
If any other person is traveling with you, then by clicking Add passenger, you can fill up his/her details for booking train ticket online. If any child is traveling with you, then its details need to be filled
After filling the detail in your filled up page, raise the page and go down the page, you will see phone number tab on which your ticket will be if you want to change it, then fill in your number on which you want to receive your ticket.
Fill the captcha and click on Continue Booking.
Now you will see all the details that you have filled, then click on Continue Booking.
Now you have to pay now, you will be given some options to make the payment, choose one of these methods and complete your payment.
- Debit Card with PIN
- Net Banking
- Bharat QR / Scan & Pay
- Wallets / Cash Card
- IRCTC Prepaid
- Pay-On-Delivery/Pay later
- Payment Gateway /Credit /Debit Card
Once the payment is completed, you will get a copy of your train ticket, you can take a print out and also get a message confirmation on your registered mobile number. During travel, you need to take any identity proof for your safe journey.
Following ID cards are considered valid by Indian Railway:
During the train ticket booking session, passengers do not need to input any ID card details. However, the passenger must carry and show any of the following identity cards during his visit. An original ID card is required for verification purposes.
- Aadhar card
- Voter photo identity card
- Driving License
- Pan Card
- The central/state government issued Photo Identity card
- Student Identity Card with photograph
- Nationalized Bank Pass Book with photographs
- Credit Cards with laminated photograph
- Photo identity cards having a serial number
