Sons of the Soil: A forgotten village game, reinvented for modern India-the lights, the fans, the buzz or all of a sudden, there’s utter silence all around and just a deep breathing sound and only one word in your ears-kabaddi, kabaddi, kabaddi, chanting over and over again.
So how interesting and exciting is the Kabaddi game, where the seven players of the mighty wolf join another den of lions and play a game of spirit and honour. Kabaddi was our own game, and at the international level it required the same support as other sports.
The new sports documentary series ‘Sons Of The Soils’ was dropped by Amazon Prime following the journey of the Jaipur Pink Panthers Pro Kabaddi League team of Abhishek Bachchan. The show was directed by two-time BAFTA Scotland winner Alex Gale and BBC Studios’ Omkar potdar association. The series will be released on December 4, 2020, on the OTT Amazon Prime Video website.
Sons of the Soil Story
The documentary follows a talented but young and inexperienced group of players who are determined to win the Indian Pro Kabaddi League championship trophy.
Sons Of The Soil: Jaipur Pink Panthers digs its heels in with intent, an unscripted documentary series created by BBC Studios and streamed on Amazon Prime Video. Live kabaddi action starves fans of the contact sport. The exhibition comes close to providing vicarious rewards. It’s fantastic exposure for both the game and the professional league that had to press the pause button in 2020.
Series director Alex Gale – his credits include a film on the football legend Eric Cantona as well as the wooden spooners Fort William FC of the Scottish Highland Football League, crafts a vibrant documentary that combines two distinct worlds seamlessly in the way that the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) brought the most popular rural sport in India to the living rooms of hundreds of thousands of urban people.
Given the essence of the indigenous sport it celebrates, Sons Of The Soil, guided by team owner Abhishek Bachchan, is uncommon fare. But more than kabaddi itself it sheds light on how under the glare of the media spotlight, the minds of the young lads out there react to the challenges presented by money and fame.
